Fearfully Made — Then Why Do You Hide?

Fearfully Made — Then Why Do You Hide?

There was a season in my life when I couldn’t look in the mirror without wanting to look away.

After a divorce. After relationships that left me feeling like whatever was wrong must have been me. After years of pouring myself out for everyone else and somehow ending up emptier than when I started.

I didn’t hate myself out loud. But I had stopped believing I was worth much. And somewhere in that quiet, tired place, God started to speak.

He didn’t start with the big things. He started with a verse I’d probably heard a hundred times.

I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.

Psalm 139:14 — NIV

I’d seen it on mugs. On wall art. On shirts. But that day, sitting in the quiet of a morning I didn’t feel like getting up for — it hit different. Because this wasn’t a pretty sentiment. This was God saying something specific about me, before I’d done a single thing to earn it.

What “Fearfully” Actually Means (It’s Not What You Think)

Most people read “fearfully” and either skip past it or assume it’s about being afraid. But the Hebrew word here is yārēʾ — and it means something closer to awe-inspiring, reverently crafted, made with holy intention.

Think about the feeling you get when you stand in front of something so beautiful it stops you mid-breath. A perfect sunset over the ocean. A newborn baby’s hand wrapped around your finger. That feeling of this cannot be an accident — that’s the word.

That’s how God made you. Not in a rush. Not as an afterthought. With the kind of focused, intentional care that only the Creator of the universe is capable of.

You were not assembled. You were crafted. There is a difference — and Psalm 139 makes sure you know it.

What “Wonderfully” Means for Women Who’ve Felt Ordinary

The Hebrew for “wonderfully” is palāʾ — meaning set apart, distinguished, remarkable, separate from the ordinary.

I know what it feels like to not feel remarkable. To go through seasons where you’re just trying to survive — make lunches, answer emails, hold it together long enough to make it to bedtime. I’m a mom of four. I know ordinary Tuesdays.

But this word palāʾ doesn’t say you have to feel wonderful to be wonderful. It says God set you apart before the world got its hands on you. Before the insecurity. Before the comparison. Before whoever made you feel small ever opened their mouth.

  • You are wonderfully made — even on the days you don’t feel it
  • You are set apart — not ordinary, even when life feels routine
  • You are His work — and God doesn’t make mistakes
  • You are known fully — Psalm 139 says He knew you before you were born

Why This Verse Hits Different When You’ve Doubted Your Worth

Here’s what I’ve learned after rebuilding my life around this truth: the reason “fearfully and wonderfully made” is so powerful isn’t just what it says about our bodies or our appearance. It’s what it says about our origin.

You didn’t start as a blank slate that the world filled in. You started as something intentional. Something created with purpose. The world — the relationships, the failures, the voices that told you otherwise — came after.

And none of that changes the original version of you. The one God made and called wonderful.

I had to learn to read Psalm 139 like a letter written specifically to me — not just a nice verse for someone else.

That’s the invitation here. Read it again. Slowly. And let God say it to you — not the highlight-reel version of you, not the version that has it all figured out. You. The real one.

How to Actually Live Like You Believe It

Knowing what the verse means is one thing. Living like it’s true is another. Here’s what helped me bridge that gap:

1. Say it out loud every morning

Not as a mantra. Not as self-help. But as an agreement with what God already said. “I am fearfully and wonderfully made.” Say it until it starts to feel less strange and more true.

2. Write it down — regularly

Journaling has been one of the most transformative practices in my walk with God. When I write, I process. When I process, I start to see where the lies crept in and where His truth is replacing them. If you’ve never kept a prayer journal, this verse is the perfect place to start.

3. Dress the identity

This might sound simple, but there’s something powerful about wearing a piece of clothing that reflects who God says you are. It’s not vanity — it’s declaration. When I started wearing pieces that carry Scripture, it changed the energy of my morning. It’s a small, daily yes to the identity God gave me.

4. Pass it on — from birth

Is there a little one in your life who needs to hear this truth from the very beginning? The Fearfully and Wonderfully Made baby bodysuit was made exactly for that. Because the earlier this truth is spoken over someone, the deeper it takes root.

You Were Made On Purpose, For a Purpose

Psalm 139:14 isn’t a sweet verse for Sunday mornings. It’s a declaration that goes back before you were born. Before your first mistake. Before anyone ever made you feel small.

God made you with intention. He made you with wonder. And He made you to know it — not as an achievement you earn back, but as a truth that was always yours.

If you’re in a season where that feels hard to believe — I want you to know I’ve been there too. And what brought me back wasn’t fixing everything. It was sitting quietly enough to hear God say: I made you. And I don’t make mistakes.

That’s enough. You are enough.
