What Is a Christian Devotional — And Why Every Woman of Faith Needs One

I remember the morning everything shifted.

It wasn’t dramatic. There were no angels, no thunder, no big revelation. It was just me — exhausted, sitting on the floor of my bedroom after yet another night of crying — and a small notebook I had started writing in. I wasn’t sure what I was doing at the time. I was just writing to God because I had run out of people to talk to.

That notebook became my first devotional practice. And slowly, over days and then weeks, something inside me began to change.

If you’ve ever felt lost, broken, or disconnected from who God made you to be — this post is for you. Today I want to share something simple but powerful: what a Christian devotional is, why it matters, and how starting one changed my life completely.

What Is a Christian Devotional?

A Christian devotional is a daily practice of spending intentional, focused time with God. It’s not a complicated ritual or a religious obligation. At its core, it’s simply a conversation — you and God, sitting together.

A typical Christian devotional includes some or all of these elements:

  • A Bible verse or passage to reflect on
  • A short reading or meditation that connects Scripture to real life
  • Journaling prompts to help you process what God is speaking to you
  • Prayer — both speaking to God and listening for His voice
  • Gratitude and reflection on what He’s doing in your life

The word “devotional” comes from the word devotion — and that’s exactly what it is. It’s an act of dedicating a portion of your day to the One who made you.

A Christian devotional for women, specifically, is designed with the unique emotional landscape of a woman’s life in mind — the weight of relationships, the pressure of motherhood, the hunger for identity and healing, the longing to be truly known and truly loved.

Why Does a Daily Devotional Matter?

Here’s the truth no one tells you: you cannot pour from an empty cup.

As women, we give constantly. To our children, our partners, our work, our communities. And somewhere in all that giving, we lose ourselves. We forget who God said we are. We forget we are loved not because of what we do, but because of who He is.

A daily devotional for women creates a protected space — even if it’s just 10 minutes — where you come back to yourself and back to God.

Science actually agrees with this. Studies show that consistent reflection and journaling reduce anxiety, improve emotional regulation, and increase feelings of purpose. But beyond what science says, I know this from personal experience: the mornings I sit with God before I face the world are the days I move differently. With more grace. More peace. More clarity.

What Happens When You Make Devotionals a Daily Habit?

Over time, a consistent devotional practice helps you:

  • Hear God’s voice more clearly in the noise of everyday life
  • Heal emotional wounds that have been buried for years
  • Build confidence rooted in your identity in Christ — not in others’ opinions
  • Find direction when you feel lost or stuck
  • Cultivate gratitude even in the hard seasons
  • Grow in self-love that isn’t selfish but is sacred

How to Start a Christian Devotional Practice as a Woman

You don’t need a perfect setup. You don’t need a beautiful desk or an hour of silence. You need three things: a willing heart, a Bible, and something to write in.

Step 1 — Choose a consistent time

Morning is powerful because you fill yourself before the world empties you. But if evenings work better for your season of life, that’s okay too. The best time is the one you’ll actually keep.

Step 2 — Pick a Bible verse or passage

You can follow a reading plan, use a devotional book, or simply open your Bible and let God lead you. There’s no wrong door.

Some of my favorite passages to meditate on as a woman in healing:

  • Psalm 139:14 — I am fearfully and wonderfully made
  • Jeremiah 29:11 — For I know the plans I have for you
  • Isaiah 43:2 — When you walk through the waters, I will be with you. That verse inspired our Saltwater Soul Summer Collection — faith-inspired apparel for women who carry the ocean in their hearts.
  • Proverbs 31:25 — She is clothed in strength and dignity

Step 3 — Write it out

Don’t just read and move on. Write what you feel. Write what you notice. Write what you’re afraid of, what you’re grateful for, what you’re asking God for. The act of writing slows your mind enough to actually hear.

This is why a Christian journal for women is one of the most powerful tools you can pair with your devotional practice. Writing is where the breakthrough happens.

Step 4 — Pray — and then listen

Tell God what’s on your heart. Be honest. Be messy. He can handle it. And then — this is the part most of us skip — be still. Give Him space to speak.

Step 5 — Let it move you

A devotional that doesn’t lead to transformation is just reading. Let what God shows you actually change how you speak, how you love, how you see yourself and others that day.

What Kind of Devotional Is Right for You?

There are many beautiful forms a Christian devotional can take depending on where you are in your journey:

If you are healing from pain, grief, or trauma: Look for devotionals centered on God’s love, forgiveness, and restoration. Passages about God’s nearness in suffering will anchor you.

If you are searching for your identity and purpose: Focus on who God says you are. Fill pages with declarations of truth over your life — I am loved, I am chosen, I am enough because He is enough.

If you are a busy mom or working woman: A short, focused devotional of 10-15 minutes is more sustainable than a 45-minute one you’ll abandon in week two. Start small and let it grow.

If you are new to faith or returning after a long time away: Start simply. One verse. One honest prayer. One thing you’re grateful for. That’s enough. God meets you exactly where you are.

My Story — How a Devotional Practice Saved My Life

I came to God after years of running. A marriage that ended. Relationships that broke me. A pattern of choices that left me hollow. I was 39 years old, a mother of four, and I had no idea who I was outside of my mistakes.

God called me back slowly. Not with condemnation but with love. He started teaching me about grace, about forgiveness, about identity. And the place where I heard Him most clearly was always in the quiet — with my journal open and my heart exposed.

That’s why I created Faith & Flow.

Not to sell something. But because I believe every woman deserves a space to heal. Every woman deserves to know that she is seen, loved, and wildly chosen by the God of the universe — not despite her story, but through it.

Our Christian devotional journals for women were born out of exactly this — the need for a beautiful, intentional space to meet with God daily. Each one is designed to guide you through reflection, Scripture, and prayer in a way that feels personal, not religious.
